It's my birthday and I'll cry if I want to....

This morning, lying in bed and snuggling with Isaac, I found myself crying.

I got up, got the kids off to school and hopped on the treadmill. After a mile or so, the tears started again.

I'm not at all sad about turning 34. For my kids, there seems to be such symbolic weight behind turning over from six to seven, but from 33 to 34? Not so much. So why was I crying?

Every fourth year, I've shared my birthday with a historic national event. For as long as I can remember, I've either been indifferent to the inauguration or downright depressed by the idea of who was taking over. But this morning, listening to NPR cranked at full volume (Isaac came upstairs to close the door to my bedroom because it was so loud that it was drowning out the cartoons), I'm happy to share my birthday with the inauguration. In fact, I feel like this dose of hope and change is the perfect birthday gift to me and anyone else out there who wants a piece of my (symbolic-- since the real one is already gone) cake.

Happy Birthday! As a reader of your lovely blog, I finally wanted to come out of lurkdom and ask some questions. I am a mom of three, my baby is 2, and I am also a runner. I have struggled with my speed and wanted to hear more from you regarding your speed progress. Where you always as fast of a runner as you are now (because you are super fast)? If not, what did you start at? How did you get faster? I wanted to see if you would post more details about your races on your blog. I never heard about the Ragnar (I am doing the Great Lakes Ragnar -sp?). I know how busy a mom can be, but I am very interested (as I am sure many are) in your running info... Thanks!!! Lori

Oh happy, happy day! How well I remember welcoming you, our first born, on a snowy January 20th in 1975. You were our gift and our delight. We are so glad this January 20th to celebrate another gift and delight - the historic inauguration of Barack Obama. You are now truly an 'Obama Mama', as your t-shirt so declares! Happy Birthday! Love, Mom

Happy Birthday!

I can tell you, you are not alone with the tears. I watched the concert on the Mall on Sunday and found myself practically bawling. My poor 2 year old was wondering what the heck was the matter. It is a great, fantastic, super time to be an American. I am full of hope and I am praying for the president and his family in a way that I have never before.

Thanks so much for all of the well-wishes, everyone!

Lori-- I owe all my speed to the FIRST program. If you google "FIRST furman" you'll find links to it. Anyway, it's a running program based on three runs a week and several days of cross training. The runs are a tempo run, a day of speedwork and a long run. I really think that both the speedwork and the tempo runs changed the way I approach running, and when I started using them, I got a lot faster. Now I'm working with a coach, and that's going well too, I really think speedwork and tempo runs are the key to running fast. Good luck with the Great Lakes Ragnar! You'll love it!
