The three best presents

It's my birthday. I've officially graduated from thirty to thirty-something. We're looking forward to a fun-filled evening at Chili's, followed by a Baskin-Robbins ice cream cake. The kids are extremely excited, mainly because my birthday ushers in the "birthday season" in our house (four of the five of us celebrate birthdays in the next four months).

I must admit that I'm pretty mercenary when it comes to birthday presents. But this year I'll give you my top three so far:

1) The picture of a birthday cake that Bryce (5) commissioned his kindergarten friend Tien to draw for me. He doesn't draw but is already showing signs of being a great manager.

2) Snuggling with Annie in her bed this morning. She looked at me with half-asleep eyes, got a huge smile on her face, and said, "Mommy, it's your birthday! Aren't you excited!"

3) Isaac playing quietly in his room while I took a shower instead of pounding on the door, screaming. His happy streak didn't extend to his nap, which only lasted 20 minutes instead of two hours.

I'm trying to adopt the philosophy that things don't really matter that much. I'll let you know after I open the real presents if those remain in the top three.
