Book #53: The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (Today Show Book Club #8)

Title: The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency

Author: Alexander McCall Smith

Our book club read this book for August. I started it at 2pm on book club day and had it finished by the time we met at 8pm. I think all of the books in the series (this is the first of six or seven that have been published) are insanely quick reads. I've read all but the last one, but I wouldn't call myself a die-hard Alexander McCall Smith fan (in fact, I really don't like his more recent series of mysteries with an old lady lay detective in Scotland). But I love the voice of these stories-- the writing really seems to evoke Botswana (not that I've ever been there) and I feel like I can imagine the world that Precious Ramotswe (sp?) inhabits. The mysteries she solves are usually not life or death problems, which is also nice for a change of pace. They're sweet, sentimental, but not cloying books.
