Title: Rumonrs of War (Children of the Promise, vol. 1)
Author: Dean Hughes
I know, I know, how can I call myself a self-respecting Mormon and a reader, and I've never read the Children of the Promise series. Well, I'll let you in on a little secret: I don't generally like LDS fiction. My little sister and my mom have been raving about these books for years, but I've managed to avoid them. Until last week when we were on vacation and I had run out of reading material and I was trying to wrestle three kids inside a Deseret Book. I didn't have much time to think, but I rationalized that I might like them because my in-laws have been longtime friends of the Hugheses (nice rationale, right?). Anyway, the book was fine. I felt myself involved in the story, but I also feel like I can predict almost exactly what will happen to each character over the course of the next four books. Will I read the others? Well, I won't pay $8 each for them, but if I can borrow them from someone for free, I'll probably follow the entire saga to its bitter (sweet) end. Yep, that's right, I'm a bookslut.
