Book #33: Baby Names Now
Title: Baby Names Now
Author: Linda Rosencrantz and Pamela Redmond Satran
Okay, so I know this is about seven months early, but I'm a planner. We've had a few names on a short list (this morning it had three names for girls and two for boys) that we've been kicking around since I got pregnant with Bryce. Whenever I've had a baby, we've gotten out the baby book, written down all the names we liked, and invariably ended up back to the same little list.
But this time around I wasn't feeling quite as sure about our short list. After all, these are names I've been thinking about for seven years-- have they stood the test of time? I decided to read (and I mean really read) Baby Names Now. I remember reading Beyond Jennifer and Jason by Rosencrantz and Satran when my mom was pregnant with my little sister, and she'll be 24 next month, so these women have a lot of experience with baby names. I like their writing and I like their analyses of the names (even though they gave a thumbs-down to Bryce). All in all, I think it's a good book to read if you're pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or just in that young female stage where you like to obsess about baby names (don't pretend you didn't go through that phase).
Anyway, I spent most of the day reading the blurbs about pretty much every name in the book. At the end of the afternoon, I had a list of 28 girls names and 16 boys names I could possibly tolerate. Eddie went at the list with his pen, and now we're down to five names.
And, you guessed it-- they're the same three girls names and two boys names we've had on our list for almost a decade.
So we have a finalized short list, but I think we'll wait on making a final decision for a while. After all, we still have at least two months before we'll know the gender, and after that, more than half a pregnancy before the kid is here.
