Book #1: Mansfield Park

Title: Mansfield Park
Author: Jane Austen

This was the last Austen book on my to-read list, and I now know why it's not a favorite among Austen fans. It's long (400-ish pages in the tiny-print Signet Classics edition) but seems even longer. The heroine is priggish, weak and boring. And she's the backup plan for the guy who eventually marries her. The introduction talks about how it's supposed to be less romantic than the other stories, that it's supposed to be moralistic, that it's supposed to be more "real-life" in the amount of settling we sometimes have to do to make choices. But it definitely lacks the sparkle of Emma, and Fanny is no Eliza Bennett, that's for damn sure.

My sister insists that the movie is better. I sure hope so-- at least it's shorter!
