Pick the right person to work and the right person to stay home, that is. For the longest time, I've worried that we made the wrong choice. I mean, I'm the get-up-and-go, always likes to be busy doing something kind of person. I thrive on busy-ness. Eddie, well, Eddie likes to come home from work, grab a six-pack of diet Pepsi from the fridge, and watch SportsCenter until his bladder or his screaming harpy of a wife chases him from the couch. He's perfectly happy not ever leaving the house, while I, under normal circumstances, get stir-crazy if I'm home all day.
When Eddie was in medical school, he always told me that I'd make a great doctor and that I was the one who should really be in med school. Since we've had the kids, he has looked longingly at snatches of my life and said that we'd be much happier if our roles were reversed. He'd be the kick-back stay-at-home dad and I'd be the driven career woman.
This week he has been on vacation from work. And it's interesting to see what a person who works 80 hours a week does when he's not working. He has done a great job fixing up the yard for the summer, replaced some air filters and even made dinner for the missionaries last night while I took the kids to their swimming lessons. We went out to lunch by ourselves yesterday, and that, in itself, was like a little vacation for me.
But you've probably noticed that I haven't blogged much this week. That's because, instead of just jockeying for computer time with Bryce and Annie like usual, Eddie has been added to the mix. And let me tell you-- I, on my most computer-obsessed days, cannot compare with Eddie while he's on vacation. If you ever frequent Cougarboard, you might notice that Cardiac Coug has been posting much more often than usual this week. And yep, he's my computer addict. He claims that if he won the lotto, reading Cougarboard could be his full-time job. If he were the SAHD, I have a feeling that the kids would be raised by Noggin while Daddy attended to this full-time job.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I love having him around and he needed this vacation. He busts his butt at work all day and takes on as many extra shifts as he can. Unlike all of his colleagues, who moonlight to afford the lease payments on their BMWs and Acuras, he moonlights to keep his kids in swimming lessons and soccer cleats.
But on Monday, I'll be glad to have the computer all to myself.
