... I was sort of hoping that no one would show up. I hadn't spent any quality time with Eddie in a few days, and was feeling so beat I couldn't stand it. Since no one had actually RSVPed to say they were coming (not that I necessarily expected them to, but I did send two reminder emails), I wasn't feeling very encouraged. In fact, I was mostly worried that only one person would show up and it would be awkward.
But Texans do read! At least transplanted Texans, since only one of the six people who came is a native. Everyone loved the book (because how could you not love A Tree Grows in Brooklyn?) and all but one of the women had read the entire thing. We had a great discussion and people sounded enthusiastic about the next book on the list (Orson Scott Card's Rachel and Leah). The lemon-raspberry pie was delicious (I decided not to make anything Francie Nolan's family actually ate because the poverty diet isn't popular at book groups).
Anyway, yay! After months of dreading the whole idea of starting up a book group, I finally feel like it might actually take root here. What's even better is that the women who have been coming aren't the ones I normally hang out with on a regular basis, so it's expanding my circle of friends, too. And these are friends who read, which makes me very, very happy.
