Title: Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs*: A Low Culture Manifesto (Now with a New Middle)
Author: Chuck Klosterman
You may remember that I read another Chuck Klosterman book a few months ago. He's such a weird, quirky, engaging writer that I came back for more, despite the fact that I get only about 75% of his cultural references and sometimes find the guy annoying. And Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs was more classic Klosterman: both fun and sort of pedantic.
My MA is in American Culture Studies, and Klosterman's book is a series of essays that I would have loved to have read in grad school. Each chapter compares several seemingly disparate aspects of American Culture (Toby Keith v. Moby), but it's written in the kind of fun, lighthearted way I never got to enjoy in grad school. If I were to teach an Intro to American Studies class, this book would definitely be on my syllabus.
