Book #41: Leeway Cottage

Leeway Cottage : A Novel (P.S. (Paperback))

Title: Leeway Cottage

Author: Beth Gutcheon

I just finished reading Leeway Cottage this morning and I'm not really sure what to say about it. I can say this-- in many ways it touched a little bit too close to home. In the book, Sydney grows up with a bossy, overbearing mother and a distant father. Shortly after her father dies, she runs away to study music in New York and falls in love with a Danish pianist. They marry and seem destined for happiness, but World War II intervenes and Laurus returns to Europe to work in intelligence while Sydney stays in New York and raises their daughter. After four years apart, they're reunited, but they've changed. They stay together, not altogether happily, and make it work. Sydney has two more children and resembles her mother more and more all the time. It's a family story of imperfect but enduring love.
