Book #40: The Devil Wears Prada

The Devil Wears Prada

Title: The Devil Wears Prada

Author: Lauren Weisberger

The first thing I learned from reading this novel is that I'm a hopeless frump. If Andrea Sachs, the harried personal assistant to fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, gets raked over the coals for wearing shoes from Ann Taylor, then my Old Navy flip flops and Payless sandals certainly wouldn't pass muster. When I was growing up in Connecticut, I loved to go into New York City, but I also always felt a bit of anxiety the night before a trip into the city over what to wear. Somehow, even as a teenager, I knew I'd stick out in the flowery Laura Ashley dresses I wore at home. In The Devil Wears Prada, readers learn all of the "dos" and "don'ts" of fashion, and most of us fall squarely in the fashion "don't" category (do you remember those Glamour magazine "dos" and "don'ts"?). Andrea joins the staff at Runway magazine and sees it as a stepping-stone to her dream career as a writer, but must first suffer as Miranda's assistant. By the end of the book, she finds that Runway has changed her, and not necessarily for the better. Although it was a totally fun read and I feel like I learned a whole lot about something I wasn't all that interested in in the first place (fashion), it did drag a bit after a while. I wasn't all that interested in how many times a day Andi had to order Miranda's breakfast or run across the street to Starbucks. But it has whetted my appetite to see the movie.
