Book #38: Eat, Pray, Love

Eat, Pray, Love : One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

Title: Eat, Pray, Love

Author: Elizabeth Gilbert

Have you ever read a book where you felt like you really know the author when you're finished? That's how I felt after reading Elizabeth Gilbert's fantastic memoir Eat, Pray, Love. Gilbert chronicles the year she spends "finding herself" after a difficult divorce. First she lives in Italy for four months, learning the language and savoring the food. Then she moves on to an ashram in India, where she spends the next four months in meditation and prayer. For the final four months of the year she lives in Bali, and finds love again.

For a lot of people, running away for a year might seem like trying to escape one's problems, but Gilbert seems healed through the process. And her book, especially the Indian chapters, gave me a lot to think about in the ways I approach prayer, love, family and relaxation. Gilbert holds nothing back either-- she isn't afraid to tell us about the hard things she has gone through in order to prepare us for the state she's in as she starts her healing journey.
