Book #16: Julie and Julia
Title: Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen
Author: Julie Powell
Our book club read Julia Child's memoir, My Life in France, this month, and since I read that book last year, I read Julie and Julia instead. As the title suggests, it's the story of a woman named Julie who decides to cook every dish in Mastering the Art of French Cooking and blog about it over the course of a year.
This was a really fast read-- and I loved Julie's sense of humor and ability to poke fun at herself. Although I had lots of fun with the two recipes my book group made from MaToFC, I don't think I'd be up for making ever recipe. Some of them sound pretty gross. Julie, however, tackled even all of the organ meats and the aspics (cold jellies), even though prior to embarking on the experiment, she wouldn't even eat eggs.
I have a kid who won't eat eggs. I wonder if I spent a whole year cooking every recipe from a single cookbook if I could get him to expand his repetoire beyond pizza, cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets. Somehow I doubt it-- but it may be worth a try.
